What is “Google My Business”?
Google My Business (GMB for short) is a directory of businesses in many different industries. Their purpose is to help users find businesses in their local area.
Let’s imagine for a moment that you have a well drilling company in Phoenix, Arizona.
When somebody searches for “well driller near me”, “well driller Phoenix, AZ” or similar terms, you want to show up high on the search results.
The businesses that have high rankings will be the ones that get the most clicks, phone calls, or contact form enquiries.
Primary places where Google Business Listings show up are Google Maps, which is an app by Google used to find directions and to help users discover businesses and locations. If you are ranking really well, you will also start to show up in the local pack as well, we will talk more about that later.
There are a couple of main GMB benefits, such as:
- GMB listings show up before organic search results
- Potential customers can call you directly from Google.
- It shows all your reviews, which helps users find better businesses and it helps good businesses stand out from the competition.
The Biggest Benefit of Having a Google Business Listing
The main reason why Google Business Listing is so useful for small businesses is that your business listing will only show up to people who are looking for services in your area.
So if you live in Phoenix, ideally you would like to show up for keywords like:
- “Well driller Phoenix”
- “Well drilling Phoenix”
- “Well drilling company Phoenix”
- “Well drilling near me”
- “Well drilling company near me”
- More similar terms
This means that people who see and click on your listing will be potential customers from your area and not from a completely different state.
If used correctly, Google Business Listings can become an incredible tool for generating new leads and expanding your business. The process of optimizing your GMB and website in general in order to rank higher and get more clicks is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
The process of ranking in the top and using the GMBs to scale up your business is difficult, but there are a few things that you can do yourself to improve the results you get which will help you get a few more phone calls.
We will talk more about this later on.
If your Google Business listing is performing really well, you will start to show up for various keywords on the Google search results page as well. This place is called the “Local Pack” and it shows the top 3 listings directly on the search results page.
Having a GMB listing is the first step you have to take if you want to grab a piece of local search market share. Without a GMB listing, it will be almost impossible to compete with other businesses.
Google Knowledge Graph
“Google Knowledge Graph” is the panel on the top right side of the Google Search Results. It’s a part of your GMB profile.
The purpose of this panel is to show more information about the brand, such as:
- Service Area
- Phone number
- Work hours and days
- Reviews from other websites and more
The knowledge graph about your business should show up every time somebody searches for your brand on Google.
How to open a Google Business Listing?
The process of opening a GMB listing is really simple. The main requirement is that you need to have an office for your business in order to open a GMB listing. But, if you are a really small company, you can also use your home address.
You can also choose whether or not you want to show your address on Google.
To open a new Google Business Listing:
- Go to the official website – business.google.com
- Log in with your Gmail account
- Follow the steps to create your GMB profile
After you complete your Google Business Profile, it won’t be displayed online until you verify your office location. The location you add in the GMB listing will be the one that will receive the postcard during the next week.
The postcard will contain a verification code. Once you receive that code, log into your GMB, and add the verification code to confirm that you are the real owner.
After you do this, your listing will be live within the same hour.
Biggest Factors For Ranking Your GMB Listing
There are a lot of ranking factors when it comes to ranking your GMB listing. We will talk about the ones that will play the most important role when it comes to ranking your GMB listing and getting great results.
Proximity to the city centre plays a large role in your rankings. The further you are away from the city, the harder it will be to rank your business in that city on Google Maps.
Without a solid website, it will be almost impossible to rank in the local pack these days. A solid website is a website with a lot of great content, a website that’s easy to read and navigate. If you rank high, you will start to receive a lot of website visitors as well. If your website is not that good, a lot of potential customers are just going to leave.
Name of your business
This one is pretty weird, but it’s actually a really important factor. Google requires all listings to use their real business names. If a business has a keyword in their name, that might help them to show up more frequently. This is why some businesses often abuse these rules by putting keywords in their listing that don’t belong there which causes them to get completely removed from Google.
If you’ve just created your listing, you might have to wait for a while before you start to get results from this listing. It can take up to 6 months for your listing to start generating leads, but this will all depend on many different factors. There are some strategies to start generating leads much quicker, but they are more complex.
This is another important factor. If there aren’t a lot of great competitors in your area, you might start ranking really quickly. This is a great benefit for well drilling companies that start their marketing early. Because of the lack of competition, they will receive results much quicker than companies from other industries.
